The 2027 Formula One season was the 16th Formula One championship. It was contested over 16 countries in accordance with cycle one of the Grand Prix calendar cycle. The points system had been changed for the second year in succession – it was changed to 10-7-5-4-3-2-1 (top seven), whereas for the 2026 season, it was 10-6-4-3-2-1 (top six).
The story of the pre-season was that, following several impressive seasons at Ferrari, American Tiger Abraham moved to Sauber to fight his compatriot Kesley Martinson for championships, following their hat trick of season successes. Unfortunately his move was badly timed; as the season has played out, it became clear that Sauber had lost ground on its 3 top-tier rivals Toyota, Williams and Ferrari, the last of which brought an end to Sauber's domination of the sport with Jean-Eric Vergne at the helm, the duo putting together a very strong end to the season to secure both the drivers' and constructors' championships with two rounds to spare. With Toyota engines in 2 of the 4 top-tier teams, however, the Italian outfit struggled to fight for the engines' championship, which went to Toyota for the fourth time consecutively.

Signed team and drivers[edit | edit source]
Team changes[edit | edit source]
- Ford: Team Ford → Lockheed Martin Ford Team. Aerospace and defense company Lockheed Martin began a 3 year title sponsor contract with Ford. The deal was rumored to be relatively cheap for Lockheed, as Ford were happy to accommodate such a large and respectable partner, who also offered non-monetary support in the form of aerodynamicists, engineers, material scientists and general techniques.
- Ferrari: Scuderia Ferrari → Scuderia ATR Ferrari. Following in Lockheed's footsteps, French-Italian aviators ATR signed a similar 4 year deal with Ferrari.
- McLaren: BAE McLaren Honda → Honda McLaren F1 Team. BAE elected to not renew their title sponsorship of McLaren following several disappointing seasons. They remained a partner and small sponsor of the team however.
Driver changes[edit | edit source]
The main movement this season was Sauber's announcement that they would not renew Abner Ashley's contract, after a four year stint with the Swiss outfit. The Brit had failed to live up to expectations – while his rookie teammate was off winning three championships in a row, Ashley could only manage 5th, 4th and 2nd. Ferrari driver Tiger Abraham, who had had some impressive runs against seasoned teammate Jean-Eric Vergne, replaced him, and replacing that American was Finnish test driver Tapani Kulmala, who had already scored a second place at the team while filling in for the injured Jean-Eric Vergne during 2025.
As per tradition, Minardi replaced their driver lineup after a 3-year stint with Royal Beck. Darnell Salvage, who joined the team alongside Beck, progressed up to a new team last year. Former Minardi driver Anselmo Rosario and former Cloud driver Gorou Kurosawa replaced Salvage last year with a split driver, but they too were dropped. Izaak Aldenberg and Sotiris Dimitriou replaced the outgoing drivers. Rosario retired, whereas Kurosawa moved to the Toyota testing team, thanks in some part due to his local sponsorship money.
Mid-season[edit | edit source]
An injury at the Singapore Grand Prix put rookie Tapani Kulmala out for seven rounds. Replacing him was ex-Sauber driver Abner Ashley, who would scored 35 points compared to eventual-championship winner Jean-Eric Vergne's 24 points in the same period. Kulmala made a comeback for the Swedish Grand Prix.
Philbert Rome was also injured during the Italian Grand Prix and was forced to miss the remainder of the season. Replacing him was Renault Driver Academy hopeful and female driver Maria Michelakakis, who outdrove 3-time world champion Marcus Ericsson in only her second race.
Bernard Babineaux and Izaak Aaldenberg were also injured during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Both were forced to miss a race but fit to run in the last round of the season, but Babineaux elected to retire from the sport early and let Lutz Steen gain some experience by running the two final rounds of the season. McLaren hopeful Mark Reier covered for Aaldenberg, ahead of his first full season in F1 with South McLaren next year. McLaren promoted Sudarshan Bachchan to test driver early to replace Reier.
