Brazilian Fabiano Cruz left his his role as full driver at the French outfit that gave him his lone World Championship title in a dominant fashion, claiming a recent lull in his pace was not temporary, but permanent. Frenchman Cyrille Paquet would fulfill his dream of driving for his home country's team to replace Cruz. Taking his place as second driver at Hyundai would be the young hot-shot German Hugo Brauer.

Van der Garde claimed he would not be seeking to renew his contract with Caterham after a nine year stint with the team, claiming he felt he had done all he could with the team and would rather retire or drive for another team. He ended up announcing his retirement prior to contract negotiations. Replacing him would be the just-as-experience Belgian of Stoffel Vandoorne from McLaren, who was left without a contract renewal offer. Many people speculated McLaren were looking for young blood, but they selected two-times runner up Romain Grosjean. Replacing him as first driver at Hyundai would be Gorou Kurosawa, who had had a disappointing season alongside championship runner up Abner Ashley at Sauber. This allowed American Kelsey Martinson to step up from test driver to full driver.

The two Minardi drivers were switched out for younger counterparts, Darnell Salvage and Royal Beck. Minardi usually give drivers three years to show their potential, but the previous pair, Rosario and Darzi, were given four years.
